Yes, flying in the hyper-paranoid Washington, D.C., area is a headache. Here’s how to plan ahead and work around the existing airspace restrictions.


The Washington Flight Restricted Zone (FRZ), as it was charted earlier in 2004. Unless you are ”cleared” under SFAR 94, or have a waiver for DCA, DO NOT try to fly in this airspace.

Thinking of flying to Washington, D.C.? Concerned about the security-related restrictions and airspace changes put into place? Some concern is justified—you need to be sure you have the latest information and understand the required procedures—but it’s not worth losing sleep over.
