EFB IQ: Know Before You Go

Ditching paper for an electronic solution is the latest fad, but we need to learn how to use it before entering the cockpit.

With the Christmas holidays upon us, many are salivating at the prospect of using the brand-new cockpit gadgets anticipated as gifts. As but one example, Apple’s iPad has supercharged interest in and growth of EFB software. In turn, it’s creating additional demand for competing products tailored specifically for cockpit use—devices such as Garmin’s 696, Honeywell’s AV8OR Ace, any of the devices designed to run Jeppesen products, or any hardware/software system of a portable computer running software to depict charts, approach plates, SIDS, STARS and airport facility directory-like products. Whether it’s a slick new portable GPS or something as promising—and seemingly innocent as—an electronic flight bag (EFB), we must know how to use, how to manage, update and alternate their functions when using them in the cockpit.
