Finding CO Leaks

It doesn’t take an A&P to find exhaust leaks, just some extra time during the pre-flight. To identify carbon monoxide in the cabin, get a good detector.

In April 30, 2005, a Cessna 170B crashed near Portland, Ore., killing its pilot. The airplane was destroyed. According to the NTSB, "radar data shows the airplane flying several meandering 360 degree turns before impacting terrain. Post-impact examination of the engine’s muffler revealed a crack around the entire circumference just aft of its forward flange. The airplane’s last annual inspection was completed on February 1, 2005." The NTSB’s probable cause finding included an "inadequate annual inspection" as a contributing factor. Similar examples easily can be found in the NTSB’s files.
