April 20, 2013, Reading, Mich., Cessna 172G Skyhawk

At 1130 Eastern time, the airplane was substantially damaged during a forced landing following a partial loss of engine power during cruise flight. The airline transport pilot was not injured. Day visual conditions prevailed. The pilot reported that the engine speed inexplicably decreased from the selected cruise power setting to 1900 rpm over the period of a few seconds. The pilot’s corrective actions were not successful in restoring engine power and he performed an off-airport landing in a nearby agricultural field
