Navaid Decommissioning, Noise-Cancelling Headphones and Drone Registration

The agency is taking the first steps toward shutting down hundreds of VOR facilities by 2025, in favor of GPS.

The FAA in mid-November announced a list of 35 VOR ground-based navigational aids it wants to decommission in favor of GPS. The listed facilities are the first batch of as many as 74 VORs to be shut down by 2020, with another 234 on the chopping block for a subsequent phase beginning then and continuing for an additional five years. In total, the FAA plans to shut down 308 of the ground-based navaids over the next 10 years.
