At about 1145 Eastern time, the airplane was substantially damaged in a collision with trees and terrain. The student pilot received serious injuries. Visual conditions prevailed.

According to witnesses, the pilot was performing a go-around. They reported the airplane was not climbing or increasing airspeed in a normal manner. Reportedly, the wing flaps were extended during the go-around maneuver and remained extended as the airplane collided with the trees.
