The airplane collided with a power pole about one-half mile short of the approach end of the runway at 1758 Mountain time, then made contact with trees and two homes. The solo instrument-rated private pilot received serious injuries and the airplane sustained substantial damage. Instrument conditions prevailed.

A weather observation taken at 1758 included one-half statute mile visibility, haze, broken clouds at 100 feet, broken clouds at 4800 feet and an overcast at 8000 feet. Emergency personnel responding to the crash reported thick fog with less than one-quarter mile visibility at ground level.
