The airplane was substantially damaged at about 1320 Eastern time during a forced landing. Visual conditions prevailed. The commercial pilot and the flight instructor were not injured.

During the second approach for a touch-and-go landing, the engine quit. A forced landing ensued and the airplane impacted terrain short of the runway. The left main landing gear was driven up into the wing and the nose gear collapsed. An FAA inspector found fuel in both wing tanks and noted no evidence of propeller rotation.
