At about 1122 Eastern time, the airplane sustained substantial damage when it was partially consumed by a post-impact fire after impacting a cornfield. The solo private pilot received fatal injuries. Instrument conditions prevailed at the time of the accident. The flight originated about 1116. 

At 1120, the surface weather observation about six nm to the north of the accident site, included winds from 360 degrees at three knots; visibility three miles; overcast ceiling at 600 feet; temperature 16 degrees C, dew point 16 degrees C; altimeter 29.91 inches. The 51-year-old pilot was not instrument-rated.
