At 0727 Eastern time, the airplane was substantially damaged when it impacted trees and terrain during a forced landing. The airline transport pilot in the left seat was seriously injured; the commercial pilot in the right seat was fatally injured. Visual conditions prevailed. During initial climb, at 0725 and an altitude of 1100 feet msl, the pilot advised ATC, “eight delta romeo just lost our engine.” No further transmissions were received from the flight, and radar contact was lost about 30 seconds later at an altitude of 300 feet msl.
