The airplane sustained substantial damage at about 1050 Mountain time when it impacted trees in rising mountainous terrain during climb. The CFI and his commercial pilot-rated student both received minor injuries. Visual conditions prevailed.

The CFI later stated they were flying up a mountain canyon when the terrain elevation increase exceeded the airplane’s climb performance. The airplane began impacting tree tops and subsequently impacted terrain. Density altitude was about 8600 feet.
