At about 1500 Eastern time, the airplane was substantially damaged during a forced landing after a total loss of engine power. Power was lost during the initial climb after takeoff. The private pilot sustained minor injuries. Visual conditions prevailed.

The pilot intended to remain in the traffic pattern to practice touch-and-go landings. As the airplane climbed to approximately 50 feet agl, the engine surged twice then lost all power. The airplane touched down on a grassy area beyond the runway and entered a ditch. The left wing contacted the ground, resulting in spar damage.
