The airplane sustained substantial damage at about 0650 Pacific time after colliding with terrain and power lines. The student pilot was killed and his sole passenger received serious injuries. Visual conditions prevailed for the local flight.

The flights reported purpose was for spotting cattle. A witness heard the airplane take off, and reported the engine sounded like it was producing “normal power.” The first point of impact was an 85-foot-tall tree located about 330 feet from the runways departure end. The airplane then descended before impacting power lines.
