The aircraft collided with terrain and was substantially damaged at 0227 Arizona time. The solo commercial pilot was killed. Night visual conditions prevailed.

According to a family member, the pilot was under emotional distress and had departed without providing details on his destination. The airplane impacted the eastern face of a mountain at approximately 7040 feet msl. The 1100-foot-long debris field continued in a west-southwesterly direction and contained all major portions of the wreckage from the point of impact and down a steep slope.
